Alaskan King Crab

Alaskan king crab, also sometimes called red king crab, gets the “king” in its name due to its size. These beautiful crustaceans can measure nearly 6 feet wide thanks to their large, thick legs full of meat. Alaskan king crab meat is heartier than other crab species and when cracking into king crab legs, you can expect large chunks of sweet meat to enjoy. Alaskan king crab legs can often be sold as a “cluster,” meaning the legs and claw are still attached to a part of the body that provides plenty of delicious meat.

Snow Crab

Snow crabs are another large crab species that are smaller than their colossal Alaskan king crab cousin, but will often have longer, skinnier legs. The texture of the snow crab meat is more akin to corned beef, shredding in long, moist pieces while retaining a sweet flavor that’s slightly brinier than Alaskan king crab. When you buy crab online, you may find snow crab legs and claws being sold individually, but they are sold in clusters as well.

Jonah Crab

Jonah crabs are smaller than their snow and king crab cousins and are closer in appearance and taste to the blue crabs and Dungeness crabs that are more common in the mid-Atlantic. In fact, Jonah crabs are caught as far south as North Carolina. Jonah crab meat is even more flaky and shred able than snow crab, making them an ideal choice when making popular crab meat dishes and crab cakes.
